Speech Therapist
A speech therapist or speech-language pathologist (SLP) assess, diagnose, treat and help prevent disorders relating to swallowing, speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice and fluency.
Swallowing difficulties range from patients with oral stage disorders to those who need to improve pharyngeal swallowing mechanics. Speech disorders involve patients who cannot produce speech sounds or cannot produce them clearly and those with speech rhythm and fluency problems such as stuttering. Language disorders entail understanding and producing language. Cognitive communication impairments such as attention, memory and problem solving and voice disorders such as inappropriate pitch or harsh voice are addressed by the speech therapist.
A speech therapist requires a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology, 375 hours of supervised clinical experience, a passing grade on a national examination, and at least nine months of post-graduate professional experience.
